Spotlight Artist – Jamea Richmond-Edwards

In Spotlight Artists on December 1, 2009 at 00:00

Detroit-bred Jamea Richmond-Edwards studied painting and drawing at Jackson State University, and began illustrating for The Jackson Free Press and a children’s book titled ”Grandma’s Biscuits” by Robert Little.  Since graduating Jamea has moved on to teach art to elementary, middle, and high school students while developing her own unique style of mixed media portraiture.  She primarily paints women and is influenced by childhood memories and the complex lives of the women in her life.  She currently resides in Silver Spring, Maryland with her husband and two sons.  Jamea was kind enough to answer a few of our questions:

Who influences your work most? And who are your favorite artists, and why?

The women in my family and community influence me the most.  I was raised by a recovering drug addict, and going to NA (Narcotics Anonymous) meetings was a large part of my childhood.  So I am influenced by these women I encountered, and still encounter today, conveying their complex lives and yet capturing  their beauty.  I’m influenced by artist Talib Kweli because of the authenticity of his work, and Kehinde Wiley for just being young and dope.  Lori Earley for being a young woman and doing the damn thing.

When and how did you discover your artistic talent?

It sounds cliché, but I’ve been drawing as far back as I can remember.  My family, peers, and teachers also recognized my talents.

When stricken with artist’s block or lack of motivation, what do you do to get inspired?

I look at other young artists for inspiration.  I may listen to a favorite album, or just check out the progress of my favorite artist.

What lessons do you learn about yourself and others through your artwork?

The biggest thing I’ve learned is patience through my art.  I tend to be impatient, but quality art takes time and patience.  I used to rush through my work, and to be honest, it wasn’t great.  But I’m a better artist today because I’m a patient artist.

What are your immediate and long-term goals regarding your work?

I plan on having a solo exhibition early 2010.  My long term goal is to become better at my craft, and to exhibit all over the world.  I’m trying to be like Kehinde Wiley and do a world tour.
